Podcast Interview & Romanian Translation

Scott Edelman has released Episode 70 of Eating the Fantastic, in which he grills interviews me at Pittsburgh’s famous Pork & Beans restaurant. I talk with him about my journey toward writing, what the Altered Fluid writing group has taught me, why I ended up writing science fiction, how I ended up co-host of the Fantastic Fiction at KGB series, and many other things. I’ve done lots of interviews, and I have to say that Scott’s questions were among the most researched and thorough I’ve encountered.

Give it a listen here.

The other news is that my Nebula-nominated story “The Last Novelist (or a Dead Lizard in the Yard)” has been translated into Romanian by Alexandru Maniu and appears in this month’s Helion SF online magazine. For my Romanian-speaking friends, the link is here.

Over at Fantasy Scroll Magazine, Iulian Ionescu interviews me in their December issue. I give my life story in three paragraphs, wax philosophical about character creation, and give (gasp!) advice to aspiring writers. Not for the faint of heart! Here’s a brief excerpt:

Here’s one question many writers dread, but I ask it anyway: what is your advice for young writers today?

The sooner you can develop a thick skin, the better off you will be. The writing life is full of rejection and heartbreak. You can spend five years working on your epic novel only to have it sit in a drawer because no one wants to buy it. You can have your favorite story rejected twenty times by all your favorite markets. You can have your beloved author or review site pan your work. Etc., etc. You have to learn not to care about this too much. It’s really hard, because we’re social creatures and primed to seek approval from others. I still struggle with this. But at the end of the day you have to just acknowledge the hurt and put your derrière back in the chairière and do the old clackety-clack.

The Brooklyn RailOver at The Brooklyn Rail, Valya Dudycz Lupescu interviews me about King of Shards and my short fiction, delving deep into themes that recur frequently in my work. And Valya really dug deep, finding themes I wasn’t consciously aware of at the time. I have to say this was one of the best interviews I’ve ever had the pleasure of participating in. If Valya ever asks to interview you, make sure you say Yes!

Here’s a brief excerpt:

In Kressel’s short fiction and his novel, King of Shards, he introduces us to places that exist on the threshold of destruction and creation, populated with characters clinging desperately to the fragments of their shattered lives. But Kressel also weaves us through his worlds with Welty’s “golden thread.” As we encounter his characters struggling to create meaning and beauty amidst the chaos, Kressel never fails to keep us grounded in the experience of what it means to be human. His characters and their lives may be fantastic in all senses of the word—demons and angels and monsters—but their longing is not unlike our longing: for freedom, for connection, for home.
