I had some time this weekend to finish this render I’ve been working on. It’s called “After the Rain” and it’s based on an idealized version of what my Queen’s backyard might look like in a solarpunk future. Grandma gazes out the window to feel the sun and smell the wet soil. A young woman walks through her backyard garden, admiring the new growth. A girl exults at the sun after a long day of rain.

In a solarpunk future, abandoned or unused urban ground space can be repurposed into gardens of native plants, which will attract birds, butterflies, fireflies, and other local fauna.

Ideally, there would be no fences, to facilitate maximum movement of local animals. But as an initial step, the above image is achievable in the next five years if we started planting and installing solar panels now. So I say, why not work towards that future instead of shrugging and letting a more bleak one come to pass?
